Many people wondered if Emperor Qianlong had single eyelids, after reading last week's post. There is a portrait of a young Qianlong in the ceremonial robe displayed on Palace Museum's website. I magnified it to the maximum size, and it turned out the emperor had in-fold double eyelids. Speaking about Qianlong, I feel that I have watched the emperor being portrayed as the protagonist of more drama series than other monarchs in the Chinese history, since I was a little girl. Ru Yi's Royal Love in the Palace and Story of Yanxi Palace are two recent examples. I was immediately awed by Ru Yi's headdress when I first saw the posters for the series. This luxury item, richly ornamented with intricate kingfisher feathers, is called a dianzi, something often worn by Manchu women of aristocracy. You will also find two fine examples at the Hall of Great Treasures and Ancient Chinese Culture: Costume and Adornment, at the National Museum of China. The framework of a dianzi is woven with bamboo or wire, normally covered with black silk. The special structure features a curved front and a flat slope on the back. The openwork allows for the addition of pearls, semiprecious stones and other decorations with auspicious implications, depending on whether the headdress was for a festive event or a casual situation. ▲ 四爷明示分享收藏点赞在看~ Photos courtesy of Palace Museum, Shenyang Palace Museum and National Museum of China图片致谢故宫博物院,沈阳故宫博物院和国家博物馆 Have a nice weekend~ 记者:林琦
