“名媛”群拼单引热议,物质消费能否代表个人品味?Fake debutantes trigger disgust丨ChitChat

My experience of lurking in "Shanghai Debutantes" WeChat group for half a month.

An article with this headline went viral on Chinese social media on Monday. The author "Li Zhonger" described his experience of lurking in a WeChat group that said its members are rich, young and beautiful ladies in Shanghai. Those who want to join the group must pay 500 yuan as a so-called "admission fee".

Vanity blossoms but bears no fruit

Although the group members call themselves "Shanghai debutantes", Li soon found that these young women were just pretending to be wealthy and the group was nothing but a platform for them to share luxurious things and split high-end service bills.

In the group, these self-proclaimed "Shanghai debutantes" share almost everything — a 500-yuan luxury afternoon tea for two, a pair of 600-yuan second-hand branded stockings, a day's rental of a Ferrari costing 6,000 yuan.

The madness does not stop there. "They rent one designer bag with four people to wear on a date with a real wealthy man who might be considered as a prospective boyfriend," Li wrote.

All that glitters is not gold

"Those girls don't care whether a set of afternoon tea for two could feed them all nor do they care about how many seats a Ferrari actually has," Li wrote. "All they want is to take some amazing photos with these luxury goods and attract attention and envy from others by posting the photos on social media."

The article has now received over 100,000 views, with numerous netizens criticizing the vanity and money worship. Let's have a look about what they've commented on the behavior of these women pursuing a luxurious lifestyle.

@18K

They may hope to get to know those who were born with a silver spoon by pretending to be rich but it is just wishful thinking. They are pursing nothing by wasting their youth.

@Aone4Sure

Seriously? I say this is a group of fake wealthy debutantes who appear to live a financially independent life.

@Daissiy

Sharing a pair of stockings? Why they do that? It's ridiculous. It just kinda of shakes my reailty a bit and I wonder if these people know anything about health and hygiene.

Geng Xiangshun, a blogger with 3 million flowers, said on Sino Weibo that these fake debutantes whose social media accounts are filled with fancy photos want to get to know real wealthy men, among which they may one day find their "Mr Right".

"They cannot pretend to be rich for good. Sooner or later the truth will come to light and they will get nothing but a miserable life," Geng added.

So dear readers, here comes this week's Chitchat topic:
